Mandrean turned and snapped at the Magician. “Oh do shut up.” Once again the Emperor looked at the map. He noted the positions of the pawns. “We will squeeze and annihilate Grithinshield for what he has done this day. His body and those of his family will be dismembered and dispersed to the every town or village to show the people what happens to those who cross Emperor Mandrean.”

“Gramlick,” Mandrean inquired. “If you were Grithinshield, tell me what your course of action would be? I trust only you to think like a great general with clear goals.”

Gramlick was disappointed by his master’s choice of action and found it to be a sad irony the Emperor suddenly valued his opinion on an issue he lobbied against. He felt spiteful for a moment but thought better of the move. The decision had been made. He would do his part to serve his Emperor. “If I were Linvin, my first goal would be to exit the borders of the Empire with all due haste in the direction of my homeland. I am told he was seen fleeing south. That supports the theory.” He stood and staggered to the Southern Province on the map. “He knows his biggest obstacle is the Sorrowful Sea. If he can find his way past it he stands an excellent chance of making his way through the Unclaimed Territory to Sartan.”

“So the question is how he plans to overcome the huge obstacle before him. Linvin sat here in this room and saw where every one of our Divisions was stationed. He even knows their strengths and weaknesses. That plays into his favor. There are three possible ways of overcoming the lake as I see it. He could try heading west to go around the shore and find a crossing of the Silver River. I highly doubt he would take that route as our absurdly high concentration of forces in the region makes a stealthy escape nearly impossible. While he has tremendous power at his command, if I were in his position I would not welcome a battle with substantial forces. He has his kin with him and the Princess. Combat would be a last resort. Therefore, I believe he will not head west.

“He could head east around the lake and cross the Mystic River. He knows that path as my colleague mentioned in his rants. If I were Linvin I would guess that we would expect him to take that path and overcome the garrison. I would therefore expect the garrison to be reinforced with urgency. The question would be whether he believed he could reach the river mouth before word of today’s events could transform into troop movements. He scattered our horses at the messenger stables to delay such deployments. Fortunately he is unaware or our carrier birds. Orders will move faster than he expects. Linvin is a superior general and wants to avoid any fight at all. Again, if I were in his shoes I might bypass the river mouth and try to find a crossing for the river further east. He knows our forces are stretched thin in the new province and all eyes will be on the ferry where he crossed before.

“The only problem with that logic is the little he knows of the area is a swamp where its vapors overcame his party leading to his capture. He has a wealth of experience fighting in swamps in Valia, but I would be leery of leading my party that way even with such experience. For all he knows the swamps could continue all the way to the Great Eastern Sea. Extending his time in the Empire increases his chance of detection and capture. That would be my last resort.

“The final way out is the one I would choose. I would head due south to the lake, commandeer a vessel and sail to the south shore of the Sorrowful Sea. It provides the quickest escape and will take him past green troops he could likely evade. He would have us waste time and resources covering the flanks while he escapes down the middle with ease. It would be as simple as it would be brilliant.”

Mandrean snapped his fingers and Fendri brought him a goblet of wine. He sipped slowly as he stared at the map and his general at its heart. “That was an insightful piece of deduction,,” Mandrean congratulated. “Do you think Grithinshield is intelligent enough to come to those conclusions?”

“I have always told you,” Gramlick began. “’Never underestimate your opponent’. He is more than capable. In fact, his varied styles over the years suggest he may have thought beyond my conclusions. You asked what I would do and I have answered.”

Mandrean addressed Tecious. “How easily could he procure a boat to cross the lake?”

“There are ports all along the northern coast of the lake. Each of them has barges, fishing boats and trade vessels easily capable of traversing the distance.”

Anvar seized the initiative and spoke again, “I did not tell you about my gift because I knew you would not handle it well. It is a shame, I had hoped you would embrace my powers as a blessing.”

“A blessing?” Rander argued. “You were more correct when you mentioned shame. That revelation will bring shame to our entire family. It will be more humiliating than when Aunt Jelena married a human. We must make sure no one ever discovers your ailment.”

“Ailment?” asked Anvar with displeasure in his voice. “I suffer from no affliction good nephew. As I said before, I have been blessed.”

“It is all so clear to me now,” Rander said as he rubbed his chin. “You can’t see it because it affects you. Your powers are a curse, an affliction. They are little different than the old men in the village who limp as they walk due to some deformity or loss of limb.”

The comments were not even directed at Linvin, but he was still offended. “Whenever Rander makes me think he has changed,” Linvin said to himself, “he reminds me of how clueless he truly remains.” Linvin looked to his uncle to see him erupt. To his surprise, Anvar remained calm.

“My dear, sweet Rander,” he began, “you sound just as I expected you would. As you speak through Bander, so your mother speaks through you. It is no fault of yours in truth. Caritha has poisoned your mind against magic from your infancy. She treated me like a sickly younger brother for my entire life. Your grandparents were terrified that my secret would be revealed and all the Greenliths would burn for their association. That was much of the reason I moved to Fraylic after Jelena left. I grew tired of having to hide my powers and be treated as a leper.”

“Caritha would say verbatim what you just recounted to me. Growing up, I actually started to believe there was something wrong with me. Then, I met a man. He was a good man. A man who cared not about the color of my skin, the place from which I came, or even the powers I possessed. He embraced me as a friend without condition. He fell in love and married my oldest sister. They bore an amazing son that they named Linvin. And that man, Dirk Grithinshield, made me swear to always watch over him when he could not do so. I have never wavered in that commitment and that brings us to where we are now.”

“It is true that I hid this from you all as long as possible. I had hoped your reaction would be more favorable. Nevertheless, my powers are a gift young ones. Before this journey meets its end, you will all see that as well.”

Linvin was the first to comment, “I totally understand your apprehension, Uncle. There have been so few magicians known to the public in recent years, that people’s minds have jumped to the wrong conclusions about magic. It is indeed a good turn of fortune that you have this gift. We will need all the help we can muster on this trip.”

Bander uncharacteristically spoke his mind next. “I don’t really understand everything you just said, but magic powers sound like something that could help us alright. So it doesn’t bother me any, unless it’s supposed to. What do you say, Rander?”

“I still want him to tell us what other facts he is hiding,” the distrusting Rander said with his arms crossed. “If he could lie about this, then he could lie about anything.”

Anvar slowly shook his head. “I did not lie. No one ever asked if I was a magician. I simply never mentioned my abilities.”

“You can spin words with the best of them,” Rander noted, “but you still haven’t answered my question. What other secrets are you hiding?”

Anvar was amused by his nephew’s impertinent behavior. Rander acted as though he had the power to make him divulge information. All the same, the brash young elf would need a reply.

“If,” Anvar said with his head tilted to the side, “I had other secrets; I would speak about them when and only when they were of relevance. At this time, I have no other relevant news to tell you. If that answer is not satisfactory, then I am afraid you are going to have a problem.”

All eyes turned to Rander. He pursed his lips and looked away angrily. His lack of audible communication revealed his begrudging acceptance of the answer.

Tax Time @Solsticepublish, @Solsticeshadows

It’s another wonderful snow day here in Nebraska.  I really shouldn’t complain.  We only get serious snow about 3 times per winter.  The rest of the time it is just dry and cold.  That’s not so bad most of the time.  So I have put my writing on hold in order to get together my tax paperwork.  I have a file I put all my receipts in throughout the year and the time has come to sort through them one at a time.  It amazes me how many bloggers said they would review my book, had me buy them one and send it, and then they blew me off.  One of them was in Canada.  That wasn’t cheap to send.  I look at some of the receipts and cannot remember what they were for.  Trying to categorize them all is like playing five hands of blackjack all at once.  Once they are all sorted I list them on a sheet for my accountant.  I do this so there’s no chance of a slip being missed.  A lot of people out there do their own taxes and I did in the past.  I still do my children’s simple returns on the free Turbo Tax app.  When it comes to mine these days, however, I leave it to the accountant.  I just don’t trust that I will do all the deductions for the right amounts and have everything correct.  Even with his help, I always seem to owe money on my taxes.  The days of planning for a refund are long gone.  I must be one of those “Rich” people the politicians keep talking about taxing more.  (In case you’re wondering, I’m not at all wealthy)  It doesn’t help that in Nebraska they “Haven’t heard of a tax they didn’t like.”  Warren Buffet hails from here and it is said that he pays more in property taxes on his small home in Omaha than in his lush estate in California.  The schools here are state of the art but every election there is a new millage proposed.  Only once in the last 25 years has the millage been voted down.  When the last one was approved, the school board had to have a meeting to decide what to do with all the money.  If they didn’t know what the money was needed for, then how did they know how much to ask for?  A friend I work with has a son working on the school board.  He said that the millage passing meant his son received a $1000 bonus.  Since when do they get bonuses and why are my taxes paying for them?  We are a country of people who united because they did not want to pay taxes.  Today we still don’t want to pay them.  When you tell me the money is going for cancer research, road construction, free lunches for underprivileged students, defense or utilities upgrades I can understand the need.   What I can’t understand are studies to see how different colors of light affect certain birds, studies to see how much people like their car and the list of other wasteful uses of my money.  Maybe I should apply for a grant to determine the effect of over taxation on my buying power?

Evolving Writing @Solsticepublish, @Solsticeshadows

Well the cover for “Quest for the Red Sapphire” has officially been changed on Amazon.  I will be updating my web sites shortly.  The new edits have not hit yet but will be uploaded soon, I am assured.  I had meant to write this blog earlier in the day and had risen early in order to do so.  Then my list of “Day Off” phone calls started and, well, here we are at midday.  As usual I am anxious to get back to writing my fourth book, “Repercussions Abound.”  As I was lying in bed last night playing through what I wanted to write I realized all the editing on the books has changed my writing style.  There are aspects I miss and new ones I am proud of having absorbed.  To be clear, I will never be an editor’s dream writer.  I am too stubborn for that.  My father is a brilliant man with an answer for nearly any question put to him.  Be that as it may, I would ask him so many questions that he would finally fall back on the favorite saying of all parents, “Because I said so!”  That mentality stuck with me in my writing.  When someone says, “Why don’t they do this instead” or “I don’t think your character would react that way.  They should act like this.”  For a while I explain myself but that is short-lived.  When someone tells me how my characters should feel or something to that effect, my father bursts out of me and I respond by saying, “It is like that because that’s the way I want it.”  Some things are worth explaining yourself while others do not deserve your effort.  In general, though, the editing has helped me improve my craft.  I have worked with 3 different editors and they have had vastly different styles.  The first one was very hands off in her approach and complimentary.  Unfortunately, she missed some glaring mistakes on my part and even worse, added mistakes of her own when editing.  It was not a good experience from a professional standpoint although she was pleasant to work with.  The second editor was a vast improvement.  She was more detail oriented but had me change certain things, not because they were wrong, but because they didn’t fit her style.  Meanwhile she added edits awkwardly into sentences making the sentence no longer make sense.  There were flagrant errors but overall it was a vast improvement over the job the first editor did.  Once again, I got along fine with her and accepted constructive criticism well.  Anyone reading this blog lately knows what I am going to say about the third editor.  To his credit, he cleaned up a lot of sloppy editing from the first editor.  He knows his craft and that was apparent.  As for the negative…it’s too exhausting to go into again but I will say his criticism was not constructive for the most part and at times was downright demeaning.  Even with the downside, I learned a good deal.  There are many things particularly in grammar I watch closer now in my writing.  I make more than my share of mistakes.  I freely admit it.  That does not mean you have the right to talk down to me.  I am a writer…an author, and that means I have a whole bad of “Because I said so” ready to go at a moment’s notice.
